Getting There and Away
By Air
From Bangkok / Phuket The flight time from Bangkok to Krabi is about
one hour. Schedules and rates vary according to seasons. It’s recommended to check
first. Bangkok Airways (Tel: 1771) flies to Krabi from Bangkok 4 times a week
during the high season (November-April). Return ticket prices start from BHT 5,420
inclusive of airport tax. Thai Airways International (Tel: 1566) flies to Krabi
daily. Return ticket prices start from BHT 5,930 inclusive of airport tax.
Just in case visitors
can’t find tickets during the high season, the other alternative is flying to
Phuket, which Thai Airways International has daily flights. The distance to drive
from Phuket is approximately 200 kms. During
the low season, these airlines tend to cancel Krabi flights. The schedules are
very seasonal. From high season, try Air Andaman (Tel: 076-351-374), Phuket Airlines
(Tel: 02-679-8999). From
Krabi Airport Onwards There are several ways to get to Koh Lanta from
Krabi Airport (Tel: 075-636-545-9). The adventure seekers are recommended to rent
a car from Krabi Airport as there are many different cars to choose from. The
conventional cars on offer are Jeep Suzuki Carribeans. There are international
car rental companies such as Avis (Tel: 02-251-1131-2) or Budget (02-203-9200).
But to get a better car or a luxury one, visitors should reserve in advance. The
type of car that is most suitable for Koh Lanta is the four wheel drive. Make
sure to have at least BHT30,000 credit limit on your credit card as these companies
will not lease the car to client who doesn’t possess a credit card and the deposit
for renting one car is BHT20,000 minimum, which will be charged only from the
credit card. Once
on the road, the distance to Krabi from Koh Lanta Yai is about 70 kms, it takes
one hour to get to Hua Hin Pier. For the first-timer, it’s pleasant to take time
to appreciate the scenery on the way. Once at Hua Hin Pier, a fee of BHT100 and
BHT10 per person will be collected. A car ferry will take you to Koh Lanta Noi.
From Koh Lanta Noi, there’s another eight kilometers’ drive to reach the car ferry
for a transfer to Koh Lanta Yai. While on the ferry, drivers can stay in the car
or get outside to progressively introduce themselves to Koh Lanta. The landscape
and coastline that people see on the way to Koh Lanta is the beginning of a heavenly
journey that will last for a lifetime.
Those who need more time to adapt to Thailand’s road and Thai people’s driving
can request an airport transfer with the hotel or resort they are staying. Luxurious
resorts promise the best of the best—even their airport transfer is an experience.
For example, some resorts will have staff pick up their guests in a private hotel
van which will take the guests to their pier where refreshments and cold towels
are some of the good perks. A speedboat awaits—guests will be taken on a 30-minute
boat ride passing the stunning views of the adjoining islands such as Koh Talabeng,
Koh Kham and Ko Po. Without a doubt, the airport transfer is an experience in
itself. Once at the pier in the old village on the east coast of Koh Lanta Yai,
another hotel van is waiting to take the guests
to their resort. A five-star boat ride of course has its price but it’s often
inclusive in the hotel rate. It sure saves time from the conventional ferry transfer
but what’s missing in this luxurious trip is the ferry trip between Koh Lanta
Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. For
a more affordable transfer, there are buses from Krabi to Koh Lanta. Kanokwan
Tour (Tel: 075-684-419).
